Arriving on the mountain as experience

The new Grüneck mountain restaurant in Tschagguns presents a balance between a compatible, restrained intervention in the landscape and the economic requirements of the leisure industry. We have designed a polygonal building with an extensively greened pitched roof that blends into the mountain panorama in a respectful way. Thanks to the slight overhang, the compact volume appears to float above the slope.

Local, untreated timber for the construction, façade and interior fittings sets an example for a sustainable, climate-friendly building. The parts of the floors that come into contact with the ground, some of which are built into the slope, are constructed using in-situ concrete. The façade consists of split, local larch shingles. Wood is also the dominant material on the inside. Untreated, local silver fir for the walls and furniture and rough-sawn oak planks for the floor create a cosy indoor climate. Our focus on wood emphasises our ecologically sustainable approach and the premises of Austria's first climate-neutral ski resort.

Making the arrival on the mountain an experience, a covered staircase leads directly to the spacious panoramic terrace on the first level. It serves as a central point of contact and provides visitors with intuitive orientation. The adjoining self-service restaurant is generously glazed towards the valley. The central kitchen on this level supplies all restaurant areas. The spacious restaurant on the second level opens up to the south towards the impressive mountain panorama. The children's restaurant is located directly behind it. The ground floor houses the sanitary facilities, staff rooms and the self-catering room with direct access from the ski slope.
