Carefully guided into modernity

On the picturesque outskirts of Weiler lies a traditional farm that has characterised the cultural landscape for decades. Once used as a dairy farm, the building combines living, barn and stables under one roof. This kind of farm with all functions under one roof is known as “Einhof” in the Alpine region. We have carefully transformed the farm into a contemporary, ecological living space that preserves the character of the building while at the same time reinterpreting it. In this way, the new building sets a clear accent without disturbing the original townscape.

The new “Einhof” in Weiler is an example of respectful treatment of existing buildings, sustainable use of resources and a timeless, authentic architectural language.

A cohesive unit again

The volume and proportions of the stable building erected in the 1980s did not harmonise with the gable and eaves heights of the existing building. It was therefore dismantled into unmixed materials. In line with the circular economy, the resulting construction timber and the façade formwork were reused for agricultural purposes.

The barn, including the historic vaulted cellar below, was renovated with great care and now connects the old building with the new one. Functional rooms such as the garage and utility room were discreetly integrated. The new residential wing is flush with the old building. As the eaves and ridge heights are now based on the existing building, we have recreated the original form as a cohesive unit.

Open structure with a retreat

On entering the new building, a wide view into the distance opens up across the pool terrace. Behind the cosy lounge are the children's bedrooms and bathroom, as well as a small office – zoned and yet with a smooth transition.

On the upper floor, the central staircase separates the kitchen and dining area, both with fantastic views of the countryside. Adjoining it is the living area with fireplace. In contrast to this open-plan structure, the master bedroom and bathroom are tucked away at the rear, offering peace and intimacy.

Sustainable, regional, contemporary

The entire building was constructed from sustainable, regional materials. The wooden façade made of local spruce picks up on the original character of the farmhouse and thus builds a bridge between tradition and contemporary architecture. The clear design language and careful choice of materials combine old and new to create a harmonious whole.
