Staggered onto the slope

A new sports and leisure park with an ice rink, indoor tennis centre, football pitches and other sports facilities is being built in the Brixen district of Milland, on the east bank of the Eisack. We wanted to create a symbiosis between the individual building blocks, some of which have considerable room heights – such as the ice hockey hall and residential tower – and the steep terrain, as well as a harmonious integration into the surrounding landscape. The design staggers the individual structures according to their height on the sloping site: the ice hockey arena as the largest volume at the foot of the slope, with the tennis halls above it, followed by the smaller buildings.

We use wood as a renewable raw material wherever it makes structural sense and leave it visible wherever possible. The tennis centre and ice rink have timber ceiling structures with timber clad soffits. Tower and ceiling fronts made of exposed concrete and steel superstructures and stands form an exciting contrast. A filigree, reddish mesh serves as a ball catcher fence and accentuates the façade of the open car park.

Hidden functions

Only the residential tower and tennis dome are visible from the street as striking, architecturally sophisticated and seemingly independent objects. The functions below and behind them remain hidden at first. Coming from the north, a promenade leads to the centre of the complex and provides access to all interior and exterior areas.

Amphitheater with a view

A total of four terraces surround the existing football pitch as a large stepped area, similar to the tiers of an amphitheatre. The highlight of the project is the natural grass pitch on the roof of the ice rink due to its elevated position. The four tennis courts with stands on the upper roof level offer both players and spectators a spectacular view of the Eisack Valley.
