Compact quadrangle with large patio
Demolish or renovate? This question often arises when it comes to the further development of school buildings from the 1970s. The Lycée Evariste Galois in the Paris metropolitan region no longer meets current requirements and is bursting at the seams due to strong demographic development.
With a holistic approach to the environment in mind, we decided to restructure and extend the building. Based on the qualities of the existing building, the individual parts will be reorganised and combined to form a communicative whole.
The new, green schoolyard forms the heart of the ensemble and connects the various functions. It is shaded by a curved canopy on slender supports, through whose large, circular openings daylight floods in and trees grow. We have extended the U-shaped school building into a compact quadrangle with a large patio.

New Living Spaces
The program includes the creation of teaching spaces adapted to the offered courses (half-board, science center, library and media center, covered courtyard). It also provides for the compliance of existing buildings with current standards (disability accessibility, fire safety, thermal insulation), the reconstruction of a theater/multipurpose hall with multiple access (for other schools, associations, the municipality), and the redevelopment of the entrance area. After this extensive renovation and restructuring, the high school now offers welcoming and warm living spaces, using natural interior materials such as wood or linoleum.

The Atrium
A naturally lit, three-storey atrium crosses the building and connects the entrance in the north with the newly created outdoor areas in the south. Crossed by bridges and galleries, this development also creates a varied meeting place for the pupils.
